Yeah, Java slogan was code once, run everywhere for a reason.

Oof, BMP. I remember those days…

Because I’m at a fast food place in the first place because my time is important and I don’t want to waste it ordering.
That and the guy taking orders does it 1000x a day and i can easily order that way instead of me navigating ten different menus just to order a simple meal for my family.
I’m OK with my old man status at this point. Tech is good when it improves things for the consumer. The kiosks seem to just improve the company bottom line IMO.
Getting all the states to agree to this seems unlikely and I believe it needs to be unanimous, right?
I would love if lawsuits brought the shit that is ai down. It has a few uses to be sure but overall it’s crap for 90+% of what it’s used for.
That’s a good take but I gotta say- kids are kids. They WILL slack off, they will goof off, they will use the phones for other things. This isn’t a critique- it’s what kids do.
If they need tools then a couple ipads or similar can be used. I don’t find the argument “they need to exist with smartphones in society” convincing for school. At work you know you’ll be fired if you’re caught using your phone too much, etc. and slacking off. Kids aren’t under the same pressure as that and quite frankly I wouldn’t expect them to act with that level of maturity as even some adults don’t and they’re older and should be wiser.
As for the problem of just existing with them? I feel like that is yet another thing that school won’t solve. That is up to their parents, etc. Good habits start at home. Expecting schools to solve all problems (especially ones so entrenched like socioeconomic conditions, poverty, etc.) is half of why we’re here in the first place. But guess what? If the kid is given a tablet or allowed to use a cell phone at the table and basically whenever/wherever they want, do you think their behavior will be different in school? Do you think it’s up to the school to be forcing this? That is yet another ridiculous burden I think we’d put on teachers and staff.
Moreover, don’t you think we should be conditioning these kids that it’s ok to exist without a phone?
These kids won’t be worse off without phones. Like you said- the rest of us did just fine without them. Let them have a calculator and computers in computer class and call it a day.
Seems odd. They’ve been pushing login.gov like everywhere.

I haven’t. The n9 with meego was amazing. The n900 too but I’m still sour thinking how great meego would be now instead of android.
It’s not going to be a shitshow at all. Business will mostly move to 11 whether they like it or not and consumers will just use unpatched win10. The exact same way they did with XP and the exact same way they did with 7.
It’s only gonna be a shitshow if there is some earth shattering vulnerability found that a worm can exploit and even then MS would probably just push out an out of band update.
This is honestly going to be a “nothingburger.”
Yep, looked more into it. Honestly it sounds great. A dedicated box AND remote with kodi and an integrated app store? I’m intrigued. Will give this os a go soon.

Cool. How about a repairable phone with a headphone jack? I’ll be a day one buyer.
Iirc you can export everything. Most allow export of passwords of course but i think proton allows export of passkeys too.
So there’s portability if they ever do disintegrate.

They don’t do it “senselessly”- the design clearly works for me and millions of other Gnome users.
It’s fine if you don’t like it but there’s no need to bash clear design choices.
I don’t particularly care for KDE design choices but a lot of people like it so what’s it to me? I’m happy for them.

I sub to a few mobile Linux feeds and I want but don’t at all think mobile Linux is ready, even for tech devotees. Too battery hungry, not enough ease of use, missing functions, etc. And that’s not including lack of apps.
Sailfish gets closest so far I think. But yes, not ready. Ubuntu touch last time I tried is fine but still a bit out of sorts.
