I don’t like the term “clever” in code, because sometimes it means “I’m too dumb to understand it”. Simply don’t touch clever code, unless you really understand it.

Best example is the fast inverse square root function in Quake. Yeah… it’s clever, but replace it by simple maths and let Quake have performance problems.

On the other hand, using AI for more than assisted coding is never clever. Some day some fuck will use it in medicine and will actually kill people. AI is not at fault here! It’s the programmer who killed a patient in this case by being irresponsible and lazy.

Devs care to debug code only if they believe in its quality. Otherwise they write the code again from scratch. This is also cheaper than debugging.

AI code is not clever. It’s all developers averaged. Even if it worked properly, you’d get average quality code.

It’s rather lazy and cheap. This is where the quality is lacking.

Also, lots of nasty bugs are in systems, because of bloat. They are getting fixed slowly, but who doesn’t know cases where you cannot shut down the machine, because of “bouncing stars”.

I still need to look up how to write an own startup script or start two same daemons listening on different IPs. This is why I avoid systemd on servers and only leave it on workstations.

I wish that someone sues when something breaks in the car that you didn’t opt in for.

And… yet better, they get sued when something breaks that is in connection with a paid service and someone suspects that it’s because they paid part caused it.

How about when the ad blockers insert a joke, when a blank screen is shown on YouTube?

Linux admins know that you’re worsening security when installing 3rd party stuff into kernel, so most of them tend to avoid it. And that’s why no one noticed that Crowdstrike problem.

The idea of “security software” is ridiculous overall. You buy a software to fix security problems in Windows and it violates the original product by inserting code into kernel code. You lose support by the original product vendor. And you think you’re secure, even the whole stuff makes you forget that IT should be always fit in solving security/restorability problems even when everything else fails.

This implies the fact that net neutrality can be guaranteed with these regulations.

Maybe they mean low latency internet connections. This might need some better hardware installations on the side of the provider. This is probably not about net neutrality.

I think default passwords are not even enough. There must be some additional fuckup unmentioned. Usually such devices don’t expose the management interface publicly, so a password wouldn’t be enough.

Yes, I use family link, too. The only annoying thing are general age restrictions. I am the parent and I need Element.IO for my kids that is rated 18. It doesn’t let me install it, even when it’s our private chat server. Fuck those people who make decisions for parents.

Yes, if you always need to tell your kid what to do, it’s all your job. Teach them to think like you think. It saves a lot of work and is less stressful.

Depends what you mean by “it worked”. Of course the kids play too much games and watch too much YouTube. But at least I have kids that are happy and I really have fun with.

It’s also easier to tell them what I want when I really need them to do something. What I want to avoid is to have kids that don’t have respect towards their parents.

I guess it’s also my attitude. I really like to come back from work and have fun with my kids and see them happy. I know many parents who rather try to get their kids to sleep as soon as possible to have time for themselves.

I decided to go in the other direction. My two boys got their phones at 7 and 8. I put parental controls on it and never allowed them install apps. Most annoying is the extensive use of Youtube so far, but on the other hand both of them are speaking English and have good grades. The usage is limited to 2 hours a day. And at 9pm the phone locks itself.

However, I talked to them about social media and blocked Whatsapp, Instagram etc. I still need to talk more to them of course, because it’s a risk for adults, too. They are individuals and I respect that they need to have fun after school. And I want them not to be “cool” online, but generally be happy with their lifes.

I hope it gets reversed in the next instance. The judge had it absolutely wrong. And the consultant did not expose it, but told the company directly that he is able to read the admin password without an effort. They sued for telling them. That’s absolutely the worst thing to do.
