I did do a test install (on a virtual machine), and everything seemed to install/configure fine using the python source code and instructions in your repo, but I wasn’t able to see any connections being made in the listener log. Brain is too tired, but I tried all of the addresses/ports listed (Debian/bash/ip addr) and created port exceptions with ufw per the instructions file. Can this work with a virtual box?

Very cool. 100% over my technical knowledge level but I’ll take a look at the code and give it a whirl when I get a chance.

An interesting concept is the idea of a distributed social web. It was the concept me, and probably a LOT of other redditors, were looking at last year, but it seems no such thing really exists. The idea that everyone’s home computer (or mobile device nowadays) could act as the client and the server. Perhaps using a firefox addon of some sort.

Do any software devs (ok that’s like 90% of lemmy, lol) know if any existing projects are trying to do this? It does not seem like an unfeasible thing, and it wouldn’t have to grow overnight, it could possibly just be a feature in an existing addon that allows communication directly between users. No centralized servers of any sort. Distributed communication without central control. Is this possible?

The existing social media companies own the world (literally), and they can maintain this control because they can buy out competitors. You can’t buy out 5 billion people though, so if people had the tools available to host their own web; and it was as easy as installing a firefox browser addon, a true democracy could exist like the world has never seen.

On a small scale yeah. The sun heats rocks and they’re able to store heat for up to an hour or so. Cats can attest to that.

Same with large bodies of water; the ocean, lakes, pools, etc.

Mozilla could do something wrong, but I entirely read this as Mozilla’s CEO had ties to data brokers and ditched Mozilla’s privacy partner because of that.

for better or worse LW is the largest instance, so joining another instance always poses the ‘risk’ of being defederated.

I believe they do use just as much RAM as current tabs, it’s just computers are better at handling it now.

Mozilla makes reference to them eating RAM, but I’m not 100% sure.

Use fewer tabs

Each tab requires Firefox to store a web page in memory. If you frequently have more than 100 tabs open, consider using a more lightweight mechanism to keep track of pages to read and things to do, such as:

This is a good thing, but just as a pet peave - why do people keep so many tabs open on desktop web browsers? Every new tab uses more memory. Computers were not designed to have 100s of tabs open. There is no way anyone actually actively uses 100 tabs, and I see people all the time with so many tabs you can hardly even see what is there. There is a thing called bookmarks and folders for storing commonly visited sites on a computers hard disk rather than temporary RAM…

But I do think it is good firefox is adding the capability, as grouping can be useful if done right in moderation. But it’s just kind of funny the person asking for the feature admits to having huge amounts of tabs open.

It’s due to the war (obviously). War does that to society. Look how much Americans and Germans hated each other but 70 years later there is not one bit of hate between the cultures.

It will take time but if the war in Ukraine ever ceases, a few decades from now people in Russia and the west will eventually make amends. That is of course if a non authoritarian government succeeds in Russia. Which doesn’t seem all that likely.

I’ve been using both OSs for over 20 years and the ONLY reason I use windows is for CAD (just 2d). All the foss options have potential but are very poor options for a longtime autocad user. Wine implementation is currently broken/terrible. VM is sorta a fallback option but doesn’t run as fast as a native windows machine.

I plan on switching to Librecad or something similar but it’s like a 10/20 year plan and something tells me I’ll have to develop the features I want myself.

I use both. Can confirm windows breaks 10x more than Debian stable.

SaaSS (service as a software substitute) bullshit

It is common for SaaSS dis-services to charge a monthly fee for use. Usually one SaaSS site does not substitute for another, so if users become unhappy with one dis-service provider it is no easy matter to switch to another. When users become dependent on one, it can gouge them at will with repeated small price increases that over time add up to a lot. We view the loss of freedom inherent in SaaSS as worse than the cost in money, but when a dis-service has you over a barrel, the cost can be painful. Thus, even users who don’t see deeper than the bottom line should beware of SaaSS.

Businesses should host their own servers.
