They don’t relly know better. Windows is familiar, Linux sounds too complicated and techy. Hell, I was thinking the same and I’m reasonably tech savvy. It’s infinitely more friendly than I’d ever expect.

People are afraid of change and unknown. Though ironically Linux might actually be closer to the original Windows experience that Win11 is (speaking from my limited experience with Mint)

You are correct, but on the other hand it doesn’t hurt to make the average person aware of alternatives.

Can be especially effective when the person buys a new PC and needs to do all the stuff you mention anyway. Yes, it is still a new OS, but honestly, it’s not that different - especially if the person remembers older Windows versions, it might just feel like going to familiar places (I know this is something my wife would really apreciate as she hates the constant changes of how things look). Obviously depends on distro, only have experience with Mint.

I’m saying this from a position of a resonably tech savvy, but not your average tech nerd (at least knowledge wise lol). Sure there are differences under hood but I don’t think the average user would really notice them that much.

They need to make it nice first, to reel people in. Once they are in and invested, that’s when ads start.

Afaik Steam has a compatibility layer (Proton) which makes the games run on linux, because the SteamOS which is running on the Steam Deck is Linux. There is Wine you could use for games outside Steam, or you could also try running them throuhg Steam.

Now I have no experience with any of this, but plan to set up Linux dual boot at some point and this is my understanding of things. Somebody better suited will probably chime in with mire details

It honestly sounds useful and I would be a little excited to use it, but I imagine Microsoft will collect the data in some way which would be bad as it pretty much records your screen all the time (I somehow doubt all the info the AI collects will be actually stored locally)?

Hopefuly one day there will be a point when a similar software will be developed that runs 100% locally, storing the data locally and have no internet connectivity and just be a useful tool.

Good news is that unless you have Qualcomm CPU (or one with integrated NPU in the long run) you are safe from it for now

If we are talking mobile LibreTube has its kinks, but overall I’m happy with it. RiMusic for YT Music. Both on Fdroid.

Obviously people will need to be working still, a time when all work is done for us is long way off. Besides, there were studies made on this and most people would still work in some capacity (not all, obviously) - but with you getting money to cover your needs you could quit thenjob you just have for the money and do something you enjoy. Or keep the job you do just for money if lots of money is important to you - but you would be free to take sabatical if you’d start burning out without fear - because you would still have the UBI even if you spent all your money and didn’t save any.

Especially now with raise of AI this is something that will be needed sooner rather than later - question is when, not if. And another question is how will humanity fuck it up - because that’s what wedo best and the theory behind it sounds too good to be true.
