Again remember that freedom of expression is freedom to not be punished by the government for that expression.

Private companies are not concerned with your freedoms.

Not saying I agree with how things are, just saying how it is. Only way to tell a private company to fuck off is to not use them.

  • To be fair, it is useful in some regards.

I’m not a huge fan of Amazon, but last time I had an issue with a parcel it was sorted out insanely fast by the AI assistant on the website.

Within literally 2 minutes I’d had a refund confirmed. No waiting for people to eventually pick up the phone after 40 minutes. No misunderstanding or annoying questions. The moment I pressed send on my message it instantly started formulating a reply.

    The truncated version went:

“Hey I meant to get [x] delivery, but it hasn’t arrived. Can I get a refund?”

“Sure, your money will go back into [y] account in a few days. If the parcel turns up in the meantime, you can send it back by dropping it off at [z]”

    Done. Absolutely painless.

  • Now I don’t know enough about electronics to know how wrong this is, but I do know enough about electronics to know that this absolutely sounds wrong.

The problem comes when someone takes an answer like this, knowing far less than I do, and they try and hook up their fridge to a car battery.

And this is why I hate LLMs. Being confidently wrong is scary enough when it’s just people, nevermind technology.

It does make me chuckle, though, that Skynet could have been totally innocent in their destruction of the human race, they just confidently came to the wrong conclusion and had the tools to carry it out.

Like a toddler whose inner thoughts are telling him to throw a cat out of the window. He doesn’t know he’s going to kill it, he just knows that’s what his brain is telling him to do.

  • I started using Soulseek nearly 20 years ago. Throughout my life I have seen p2p sharing platforms disappear one by one. But Soulseek? I’m amazed every day that I use it and discover that it’s still alive. It is the eternal soldier that continues the fight to this day.

Amusingly there are a few search terms which come up blank, but just throw in alternative key words and all is fine. I discovered this when searching Franz Ferdinand came up with none of their music!
