Yeah, I’m far from anti-AI, but we’re just not anywhere close to where people think we are with it. And I’m pretty sick of corporate leadership saying “We need to make more use of AI” without knowing the difference between an LLM and a machine learning application, or having any idea *how" their company could make use of one of the technologies.
It really feels like one of those hammer in search of a nail things.
What people mean by AI has been changing for as long as the term has been used. When I was studying CS in the 80s, people said the holy grail was giving a computer printed English text and having it read it aloud. It wasn’t much later that OCR and text to speech software was commonplace.
Generally, when people say AI, they mean a computer doing something that normally takes a human, and that bar goes up all the time.
LLMs don’t “understand” anything, and it’s unfortunate that we’ve taken to using language related to human thinking to talk about software. It’s all data processing and models.
The article makes a mention of the early part of the movie Her, where he’s writing a heartfelt, personal card that turns out to be his job, writing from one stranger to another. That reference was exactly on target: I think most of us thought outsourcing such a thing was a completely bizarre idea, and it is. It’s maybe even worse if you’re not even outsourcing to someone with emotions but to an AI.
That’s a shame. I never played it. My kid did/does, but rarely.
Kind of a shame that the pandemic was so soon after. I wonder how much it affected the game’s popularity.
Really interesting video. I can imagine playing an MMORPG where you get around by actually walking and running. Suddenly the biggest computer geeks would be super fit.
No, I get it, I just think it would be cool to build a structure that way. You’d have to fill in the gaps, but people made lots of buildings like that once upon a time.

Agreed, it’s good to have these kinds of articles so people get a better feel for what tools like this are and aren’t.
People thinking LLMs should be even serviceable at chess didn’t understand LLMs. They really aren’t problem solving applications. They’re optimized for making responses to questions that look like what a response should look like, not for being accurate. That’s really clear if you ask them for mathematical proofs. They will generate proofs that look like the right sort of thing, but they won’t be correct unless they have the specific proof in their training data.

The article at least implies there were changes between the time you could buy and the time they were shipping.
So many of us came here from Reddit because we felt burned by them, and the whole monolithic architecture feels like it risks getting corporatized. I came to a federated place because it seems much less likely to have that happen. Not really interested in that model currently.
And not only are there a lot of crappy products with inflated scores because fake reviews, there are also a lot of good products with low scores because of fake negative reviews but competitors. The reviews are pretty much useless now.
Plus their search algorithm, which used to be amazing, now pushes so much crap because the companies pay them to be at the top that the results are horrible now.
Where I am (US), Amazon’s anti-competition practices make it pretty hard for other companies to be cheaper. If Amazon doesn’t think they’re getting the best price, they can drop you, and so many people shop exclusively on Amazon that that can be a death knell. Which is part of the reason to stop shopping there.
You know, I feel like we had a real opportunity to counteract some of the “fake news”/propaganda in the media by having these AI-based technologies anchored to more fact-based sources. At least some people would assume their smart speaker or LLM were objective and give it a higher level of trust, and if that trust was validated, we might move in the right direction. But this kind of stuff so deeply tarnishes their reputation that any opportunity is probably irrevocably lost.
I’m a manager at a large aerospace and defense company. We had a hybrid arrangement where most people (who didn’t have to touch hardware) could work from home a couple days a week. Most people seemed to think it was pretty reasonable. There really are benefits to in person collaboration, so some on site days seemed to make sense.
We recently moved to fully RTO, and I find it frustrating. It’s not a big deal personally - I live close and I’m older - but it pisses off a lot of the employees, who see no good reason for it. I don’t see any notable productivity increase moving from three to five days on site, it just makes my management job harder.
